| Assignment Description: 18 x 24" charcoal drawing Find a photograph to use as a reference for this drawing; or: find several different photographs to use as references to create your own landscape. Whichever method you choose, you want to have a foreground, middle-ground, and background. This way you can use atmospheric perspective to create a deep sense of space. Atmospheric perspective: An optical effect caused by the particles of moisture and dust suspended in the atmosphere that scatter light. When looking into the mountains, the closest ones are clear, but each succeeding range appears paler, bluer, and less distinct. As distance increases, definition (clarity of focus & detail, value contrasts, textural differences) decreases. Things to consider: What kind of mood do you want to create? Peaceful and serene, mysterious, stormy, etc. Will there be any people or animals in the landscape? Bridges, buildings, fence, sun, moon, clouds, etc.? |
